Beginning in Sacramento, the Central Pacific Railroad stretched 690 miles eastward across the harrowing Sierras and blistering deserts to join the Union Pacific Railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869. Most people have some awareness that a large chunk of the Transcontinental Railroad was built by Chinese immigrants in the years following the Civil War.
